Coilovers for a Lightweight Off-Road Vehicle
A 24-inch total-length request is not enough to select a coilover for a lightweight off-road vehicle in extremely rough service. Establish compressed and extended lengths, mounts, suspension geometry and actual corner loads before choosing springs or damping. Overall length is not suspension travel.
Define the dimension
Clarify whether 24 inches is fully extended, compressed or measured including hardware. Use the manufacturer’s measuring points consistently. Mount type and hardware dimensions matter alongside length, and a longer unit is not automatically a better rough-service choice.
Product families are not universal replacements
Rancho quickLIFT Loaded is a spring-equipped application-specific assembly. Bilstein M 9200 coil-over options are a configurable approach where springs may need to be selected separately. B8 6112 includes springs in its supported package. None becomes a match for an unidentified custom vehicle solely because a spring is included.
Weight and geometry determine spring requirements
“Lightweight” does not supply a spring rate or damping specification. Wheel travel and shock travel can differ with mounting geometry. Corner loads, intended terrain and available compression and extension margins need to be evaluated by the suspension builder.
Plan rough-service tuning
Valving may need to differ by axle or corner in a custom setup. Reservoir space, hose routing and service requirements belong in the design before ordering. Have a qualified builder establish limits and supporting hardware, then select the exact damper and spring combination. Do not adapt an application-specific truck assembly to a custom vehicle from a broad product description.
