Bilstein Shocks and Struts: Compare the Product Families

Bilstein's range covers factory-style replacements, truck leveling, performance cars, off-road applications, and motorhomes. The important comparison is what each family is designed to do. A shock for a standard-height truck, a lowered car, and a custom off-road suspension are not interchangeable upgrades.

Truck shocks: B6 4600, B8 5100 and B8 5160

B6 Heavy Duty 4600 emphasizes application-specific monotube control for supported standard-height uses. B8 5100 applications address lifted or leveled trucks, with fitment tied to the specified lift range. Selected ride-height-adjustable 5100 front units use an adjustable spring perch with existing stock springs and mounting hardware; adjustment can reach 2.75 inches on some applications. B8 5160 adds an external reservoir for increased oil capacity and heat management. RCD 5100 applications cover selected lifted setups, including specified applications up to six inches.

Car replacements and performance systems

B4 targets factory-style replacement, with separate air-strut applications combining damping and air-suspension functions. B6 emphasizes performance-oriented control, while B8 Sport targets supported performance and lowered applications. B12 Pro and Sportline packages pair Bilstein dampers with Eibach springs. B16 offerings include ride-height-adjustable systems and selected versions with damping adjustment or electronic control. Confirm the exact kit rather than assuming every B16 has every feature.

Universal, motorsport and steering products

Universal truck families include 5125, 5165, and 7100 options with differing lengths, mounts, and valving. Some use reservoirs. Universal motorsport struts offer multiple stroke and valving choices, requiring specification-based selection. The B8 5100 dual steering damper kit addresses steering movement on supported applications; it is not a replacement for worn steering parts.

Motorhome applications

B6 Heavy Duty motorhome shocks are selected by the underlying chassis and application. Their role is controlling movement, not increasing weight ratings or guaranteeing elimination of sway.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Bilstein 5100 raise the truck?

No. Ride-height adjustment is a feature of selected front applications with adjustable spring perches, not every 5100 shock.

Should I choose B4 or B8 for a factory-style repair?

B4 is the factory-replacement family. B8 Sport serves supported performance applications, including certain lowered setups. Match the exact vehicle and suspension.
