Motorhome suspension parts usually match the rolling chassis rather than the coach manufacturer's model name. That includes RV and motorhome shocks, steering stabilizers, sway-control components, and many helper spring kits.
A Winnebago, Tiffin, Fleetwood, Thor, Newmar, or Coachmen body may sit on a Ford, Workhorse, Freightliner, Spartan, Chevrolet, or Mercedes-Benz chassis. The correct suspension components depend on that foundation.
Knowing the chassis manufacturer is only the beginning. The chassis model, model year, GVWR, axle ratings, and existing suspension can also affect fitment.

This distinction matters because shocks attach to the chassis suspension. Their mounting style, travel, valving, and dimensions must work with that chassis.
The coach manufacturer and floor plan are still useful as cross-checks. However, they shouldn't replace the chassis information when you're confirming shock fitment.
The Same Coach Brand Can Use Different Chassis
One manufacturer may build different motorhome models on several chassis families. A coach family may also change chassis between model years or floor plans.
That means searching only by a coach's name can produce incomplete or misleading fitment results.
The reverse is also true. One Ford F-53, Workhorse W-Series, or Freightliner XC chassis family can appear beneath many unrelated coach brands.
Once the chassis is identified, the suspension catalog becomes much easier to navigate.

Those platforms use very different suspension designs. A gas Class A, a diesel pusher, and a van-based Class C aren't interchangeable in applications.
Even within a single chassis family, weight ratings and production changes can affect which shock is correct.
Where to Find Your Motorhome Chassis Information
You usually don't need complete service records to identify your chassis. The vehicle itself provides several useful sources.
1. Find the VIN
The VIN is one of the most useful pieces of information you can provide when requesting motorhome suspension parts.
For a vehicle manufactured in multiple stages, the VIN is assigned during the incomplete-vehicle stage. The completed motorhome also receives certification from the final-stage manufacturer.
Depending on the RV, you may find the VIN:
- Visible through the windshield near the driver's position
- On a label near the driver's area
- On the vehicle registration or title
- On chassis documentation supplied with the motorhome
- On a chassis identification plate or label
Keep the complete 17-character VIN available. A partial VIN may not provide enough information for an accurate lookup.
2. Find the GVWR and GAWR Ratings
Look for the vehicle's certification or weight label. You want the GVWR and the front and rear GAWR values.
- GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
- Front GAWR: Maximum rated weight for the front axle
- Rear GAWR: Maximum rated weight for the rear axle
These numbers matter because a single chassis family can be offered with different weight ratings. Suspension and steering products may change at specific rating breakpoints.
⚠️ Important: Don't estimate your motorhome's weight rating from its length. Two similar-looking coaches can use different chassis ratings and suspension components.
3. Look for the Chassis Manufacturer and Model
A chassis label, owner's manual, build sheet, or VIN lookup may identify the chassis directly.
Useful descriptions include:
- Ford F-53
- Ford E-450
- Workhorse W22
- Freightliner XC
- Spartan K2
- Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
"Winnebago," "Tiffin," or "Fleetwood" isn't the chassis manufacturer. Those names identify the coach manufacturer.
4. Check the Existing Suspension
A few photos can answer questions that paperwork can't.
Take clear pictures of the existing front and rear shocks. Include both mounting points whenever possible.
Also photograph any readable part numbers, labels, steering stabilizers, sway bars, helper springs, or other aftermarket components.

Your Motorhome Model Year and Chassis Year May Be Different
This is one of the easiest details to miss when ordering RV shocks.
A chassis can be manufactured before the coach builder completes the motorhome. The finished RV may then be sold under a later model year.
For example, your registration might identify the motorhome as one model year while the chassis records indicate an earlier chassis year.
That difference can matter when suspension parts change during a chassis production run.
Don't rely only on the coach year printed on your registration. Use the VIN and chassis information to confirm the platform's correct production details.
If the chassis year and coach year appear different, provide both when requesting fitment help.
What Information Should You Send for a Motorhome Shock Quote?

For a conventional shock, useful measurements can include:
- Extended length
- Collapsed length
- Upper mounting style
- Lower mounting style
- Eyelet or sleeve dimensions when applicable
Measure shock length using the correct reference points for its mounting design. Don't measure only the outside dimensions of the shock body.
